Palm Desert, Hell and Cosmos in one unique experience

In October’s second weekend, California’s Palm Desert spiritually transfers itself to Antwerp, Belgium, which transforms in one authentic Mecca for a specific group of music lovers. One must not simply think that from the stoner’s desert only comes cactuses and tumbleweeds: this desert will have a whole range of sub-genres and two great portals, one into the depths of Hell and another into cosmos. All of this will be available in one unique experience.

Starting out with Palm Desert, we'll have the veterans Fatso Jetson, younger neighbors of Kyuss, created in the mid-90’s by the ex-Yawning Man members Mario Lalli and Larry Lalli. With six studio albums, last of which released in 2010, the North Americans want to prove that they don't owe anything to European Stoner monsters Orange Goblin and Dozer. The British ones are promoting Back from the Abyss (2014), while the Swedish returned into activity in 2012 after a hiatus, but without any new material. Competing with all of these monsters are included as well one of the greatest european stoner bands of the moment, the Ukrainians Stoned Jesus. Not even the civil war stopped them and after their great success Seven Thunders Roar, they come back with an album just straight out of the oven, The Harvest.

Speaking of monsters, we can enter a portal straight to Hell, where we can find the Demons of Doom. The entrance is guarded by the first bastard, the reborn Goatsnake. This beast came back to life in the land of the Doom in 2010, to headline Roadburn Festival with the original line up. After that, original members Pete Stahl (Scream), Greg Rogers and Greg Anderson (Burning Witch and Sunn O))) ), started working on a new album, along with the new bassist Scott Renner. The result is Black Age Blues, released during this year of 2015 and produced by Nick Raskulinecz.

Then, continuing into the depths of Hell, we have to battle with two Beasts of Bong, the green creature Belzebong and the grotesque Bongzilla. The first one will try to transform us in one of his own Dungeon Vultures, while the other will try to send us to the Gateway of his route “666lb. Bongsession”. (Maybe next year we could face another Beasts of this kind, like Bongripper or Mike Vest’s Bong. Fingers crossed). Those who survive these two creatures will have a final boss to defeat: nothing more, nothing less, than the Monolord. This Lord of Hell released Vænir, one of the best records of the year in the whole genre, and it’s not a coincidence that some compare the power of their Drone Doom to Sunn O)))’s, capable of shaking half of Belgium.

With this Lord defeated, the returning path to Earth consists in passing through the Drone Doom of the big headliner of the festival. The Master Dylan Carlson will arrive to Antwerp more rocky than ever, and in conjoined effort with drummer Adrienne Davies and the new bassist Bill Herzog, they will try to explain us why “Even Hell Has Its Heroes”. Besides Primitive and Deadly, released in 2014, we also hope to hear older songs like “Ouroboros is Broken”, “High Command”, or who knows, some track from The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull.

Now, we can leave Earth behind and start our travel to outer space. The first stop is the Moon, where Moon Duo Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada will make us walk in Circles in their psychedelic Mazes. Leaving the Moon’s Shadow of the Sun behind, we start to see Glowsun and hitting in some stones. It will seem like an Eternal Season to overpass that asteroid belt and finally hit the ground again, where we can contemplate the beautiful Mars Red Sky while listening to Stranded In Arcadia and the French’s self-titled debut album. We continue the travel hoping to find the “Moons of Neptune” with The Machine equipped with one of the best psych stoner albums from the last years: Solar Corona (2009).

When we start to leave solar system behind, we become attracted to a black hole where we'll be capable to reach a total state of mediation with Causa Sui and Papir. And then we have a huge question to face. After black hole distort and mix the space and time, will there be anything left? Is it possible to obtain something incredible mixing all of these genres: stoner, sludge, doom and psych? The answer is.. YES!! The fantastic multi-dimensional beings capable of this deed are called Ufomammut and they will give one of the most intense concerts in the whole festival, based on the most recent record Ecate, one of the best albums of 2015.

Facing all of this, what can we do? Just one thing. Book our flights, start packing (while listening Wav’s Desert Playlist) and go to the Flemish Region to live this experience.
